IKEA Recall of Crib Mattresses Due to Risk of Infant Entrapment

IKEA Recall of Crib Mattresses Due to Risk of Infant Entrapment IKEA North America Services LLC, of Conshohocken, Pa. more commonly known simply as IKEA, is recalling some of their mattresses that were manufactured in Mexico, Poland, China and the United States and sold exclusively at IKEA stores nationwide and online at www.ikea-usa.com from October 2000 to May 2014 for about $20 to $100. Description This recall involves hundreds of thousands of IKEA SULTAN and VYSSA crib mattresses with the following model names: SULTAN BLUNDA, SULTAN DRÖMMA, SULTAN SNARKA, SULTAN SUSSA, VYSSA SLUMMER, VYSSA SPELEVINK and VYSSA SLÖA. The recalled mattresses measure 52 inches long and 27 ½ inches wide and were manufactured on or before May 4, 2014. The identification label attached to each mattress cover has the date of manufacture in Month-DD-YY format or YY-WW format and the SULTAN or VYSSA model name. In the YY-WW format, mattresses with a date code of 14-18 or earlier are being recalled. A gap between the mattress and crib ends larger than two finger width is an indication of the defective mattress. What Can Happen? One of the dangers posed by this defective mattress is that a gap could exist between the mattress and crib ends larger than allowed by federal regulations, posing an entrapment hazard to infants. Essentially, an infant could become wedged in the gap which would in turn possibly cause injury and or death. Remedy Consumers should immediately stop using a recalled mattress and inspect it by making sure there is no gap larger than the width of two fingers between the ends of the crib and the mattress. If any gap is larger, customers should immediately stop using the recalled mattresses and return it to any IKEA store for an exchange or a full refund.
