Toyota is issuing a recall for certain 2004-2005 Toyota Sienna vehicles manufactured between January 10, 2003, and August 10, 2005; and also 2007-2009 Sienna vehicles manufactured between February 20, 2007, and December 12, 2008. The vehicles in question have issues with a problematic shift lock solenoid. There is a possibility that the shift lever in the affected vehicles could be moved out of Park position without depressing the brake pedal.
The vehicles in question would in effect not utilize the shift lock safety feature that is in place to prevent a vehicle from shifting out of Park and in to neutral or a gear. The consequences of a vehicle shifting out of park under these circumstances could be severe as it could cause a rollaway or runaway car leading to a collision and resulting injuries and or death to the occupants and others on and around the roadways.
Toyota will mail interim notifications to owners beginning in late October 2013. When parts are available, owners will be sent a second notice and authorized dealers will replace the shift lock solenoid, free of charge. Owners may contact Toyota directly at 1-800-331-4331.
